Bite-Size Bible Study for Busy People

Luke 1
Mary’s Humility

Read: Luke 1:39-56

Mary travelled to the hill country and entered Zacharias’s house in a city of Judah, greeting Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard her greeting, her unborn baby leapt in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth loudly proclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! Why am I so favoured that the mother of my Lord has come to me? As soon as I heard your greeting, the baby leapt for joy in my womb! Blessed is she who believed, because what was spoken to her by the Lord will come true.”

Mary proclaimed,
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior because he has looked favourably on his humble servant. From now on, all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.

His mercy extends to those who fear him, across all generations. He has shown strength with his arm, scattering the proud in their hearts, dethroning princes, and exalting the lowly.

He has fed the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

He has helped Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy as he promised our ancestors, including Abraham and his descendants forever.”

Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her house.

Explanation

Mary’s response is not passive acceptance, but active worship rooted in clear understanding of God’s character. She recognises His holiness, mercy, and faithfulness across generations. Her song reveals a reversal shaped by God’s kingdom: humbling the proud, lifting the lowly, and fulfilling His promises.

This is not personal reflection alone; it is theological clarity expressed in praise. Mary sees her place within God’s larger redemptive work, recognising that what He is doing in her is part of what He has always promised. Worship flows from rightly seeing who God is and what He is doing.

A question for today

What is God showing me about who He is?

A sentence to take into the day

Worship begins with recognising God’s faithfulness.

One thing to do today

Take time today to intentionally praise God for who He is, not just what He has done.
