Bite-Size Bible Study for Busy People
The Ascension
Read: Luke 24:44-53
He told them, “These are my words I spoke to you while I was with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
He said, “It is written, that the Christ had to suffer, rise again on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, starting from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. Behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you.
But stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.” He led them out to Bethany, lifted his hands, and blessed them. While blessing them, he left and was taken up into heaven. They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, praising and blessing God in the temple continually. Amen,”
Explanation
Jesus concludes His teaching by demonstrating that all Scripture points to Him: His suffering, resurrection, and the offer of forgiveness to every nation. What was once obscure is now clear.
The disciples are not only enlightened but also commissioned: they are witnesses to what they have seen and received. However, they are not sent out alone; they are instructed to wait for the promised power from God.
As Jesus ascends, His physical presence departs, but His authority and mission remain. The reaction is remarkable. They worship and experience joy because His work continues through them.
