Luke 24
The Great Commission
Read: Luke 24:36-39
As they said these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be to you.”
But they were terrified and filled with fear, believing they had seen a spirit.
He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet; it is truly I. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
They gave him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. He took them and ate in front of them. He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms concerning me must be fulfilled.”
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He said to them, “Thus it is written, and it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. Behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Explanation
Jesus appears among His disciples, meeting fear with peace and doubt with concrete reassurance. Their uncertainty is real, yet Jesus does not dismiss it. He addresses it, anchoring their faith in His risen, tangible presence. This moment is not only about reassurance but also preparation.
Before they are sent, they must be convinced. The reality of the resurrection becomes the foundation of their future witness. The Great Commission flows from this: those who have encountered the risen Christ are called to testify to Him. Assurance comes before mission; clarity fosters obedience. What they receive here, they will soon carry outward.
A question for today
The risen Jesus sends out His followers with a sense of purpose. Where is God sending you to live out and speak the gospel this week?
