Luke 4
The Temptation
Read: Luke 4:1-14
The devil challenged Jesus, saying, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” Jesus replied, quoting scripture, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”
The devil took Jesus to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single moment. He said, “I will give you all this authority and glory, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I choose. If you worship me, all of this will be yours.” Jesus replied, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
He led him to Jerusalem and set him on the temple’s pinnacle, then said, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;’ and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus answering, said to him, “It is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
Once the devil had completed every temptation, he left him, to return another time.
Jesus came back to Galilee empowered by the Spirit, and his reputation spread throughout the surrounding region. He taught in their synagogues and was widely glorified by all.
Explanation
Jesus enters the wilderness not by chance, but guided by the Spirit. In loneliness and weakness, temptation arises. It attacks identity, trust, and allegiance. Each challenge offers a shortcut: provision without dependence, authority without obedience, glory without the cross.
Jesus resists not through argument, but by grounding Himself in God’s Word, showing that true strength lies in submission, not self-assertion. This moment reveals that temptation is not merely about actions but about trust. Victory does not come from avoiding pressure, but from standing firm in truth.
What follows is not defeat, but Spirit-empowered readiness for mission.
