Luke 17
Gratitude
Read: Luke 17:11-19
While he was travelling to Jerusalem, he was passing along the borders of Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a certain village, ten men who were lepers met him, standing at a distance. They raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” As they went, they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he realised he was healed, turned back, praising God loudly; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
Then Jesus replied, “Were not ten of you healed? Where are the other nine? Was no one else to return and give praise to God except this outsider?” And he told him, “Get up, and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
Explanation
Ten are healed, yet only one returns—revealing that receiving God’s grace does not automatically produce gratitude. The difference is not in what was given, but in how it was recognised. The returning man not only acknowledges the miracle, but responds in worship, demonstrating that true faith sees beyond the gift to the Giver. Gratitude becomes the evidence of deeper understanding. While all experienced physical healing, only one is commended for faith. This moment exposes a subtle danger: it is possible to receive from God and move on unchanged. Faith pauses, returns, and gives thanks.
