Bite-Size Bible Study for Busy People

Luke 14
Cost of Discipleship

Read: Luke 14:25-33

A large crowd was following him. He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters – yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not sit down first and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? If he lays the foundation but cannot finish it, all who see it will begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If not, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off to ask for terms of peace.

In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

Explanation

Jesus confronts the cost of discipleship with clarity and urgency. Following Him is not an addition to life, but a reordering of it. Loyalty to Jesus must take precedence over every other attachment, even those most valued. The call to carry the cross is not symbolic of mild inconvenience, but of surrender, sacrifice, and identification with Him.

This passage strips away superficial commitment and reveals true allegiance. Discipleship is not defined by interest or proximity, but by priority. To follow Jesus is to surrender every competing claim and to place Him at the centre without reservation.
