Bite-Size Bible Study for Busy People

Luke 5
Jesus Calls His Disciples

Read: Luke 5:4-11

While the crowd pressed around him and listened to the word of God, he was standing by Lake Gennesaret. He noticed two boats by the shore, but the fishermen had left them and were cleaning their nets. He then entered one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to row a little away from the land. Sitting in the boat, he taught the people gathered there.

After he finished speaking, he told Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Simon answered him, “Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the net.” When they did so, they caught a large number of fish, and their net almost broke. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to help, and both boats became so full that they started to sink. Seeing this, Simon Peter fell to his knees before Jesus, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.” He was amazed, and so were all his companions, at the huge catch of fish. Likewise, James and John, Zebedee’s sons and partners of Simon, were astonished.

Jesus told Simon, “Don’t fear. From now on, you will be catching people alive.”

When they had brought their boats ashore, they left everything behind and followed him.

Explanation

Jesus meets Peter in the context of ordinary work and calls him into something greater. After a night of failure, the instruction to try again requires trust beyond experience and logic. Peter’s obedience leads to an overwhelming result, revealing both Jesus’ authority and Peter’s own unworthiness. Yet instead of withdrawal, Jesus calls him forward.

The encounter exposes a pattern: recognition of Jesus leads to awareness of self, which then leads to calling. Discipleship begins not with ability, but with response. What is surrendered becomes the very place from which God works.
