Luke 13
Fruitfulness
Read: Luke 13:6-9
He told this parable. “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. He said to the vineyard keeper, ‘Behold, these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and found none. Cut it down! Why does it waste the soil?’ He answered, ‘Lord, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilise it. If it bears fruit, fine; but if not, after that, you can cut it down.’”
Explanation
The parable presents both urgency and patience. The absence of fruit is not ignored—it is confronted. Yet instead of immediate judgement, time is granted for change. This reveals the tension within God’s dealings: He is patient, yet purposeful. Opportunity is extended, but not indefinitely. The expectation remains—fruit must follow.
This passage calls for honest evaluation, not complacency. Grace is not permission to remain unchanged; it is space given for transformation. The question is not whether time is available, but how it is being used.
